I added caliper holders to my tool holding system, because who among us hasn’t needed their calipers held sometimes? I’ve tested it so far on these Neiko calipers that we have, but I suspect it will work on others. If you’d like to print your own, you can find the STL files on GitHub.
My philosophy on academic writing is to make it as engaging as possible. I find that, in the pursuit of “objectivity”, much of the literature is written in a way that almost seems designed to be boring and impenetrable. A while ago, however, I figured out that journals often don’t force you to write this way, so I’ve been writing all my manuscripts for the past few years in a slightly more direct style. I see no downside to doing it this way.
“But wait”, some of you might be thinking, “what if I get stuck with a reviewer who’s a stickler for the passive voice? Do I have to go back and change everything?” I found myself in this situation when submitting to a conference recently, and I thought it was pretty likely that ChatGPT could produce turgid and overly-verbose writing on command. It did not disappoint:

I installed Open WebUI and tried the same prompt with Phi4, and that seemed to work fine as well. Given these results, I plan to never write in the stupid passive voice again. Good riddance.
